Surpresa mga Nigga is the debut album of Ethno Hop Posse or E.H.P, one of Dongalo Wreckords’ major rap groups. This album is a bit of an improvement compared to some of the early Dongalo releases back in the mid 90s. The album is ok especially the tracks, lyrics and beat.
A review of the tracks
There are a total of 10 tracks in Surpresa mga Nigga. All are rap tracks with no skits and are mostly rapped in tagalog.
Most are freestyle battle tracks like “Supresa Mga Nigga”, “Laban Sa Lahat”, “Tabi-Tabi”, “What U Wanna Know???” and “Resbak”. Most of these tracks are ok but I didn’t like Andrew E.’s freestyle in “What U Wanna Know???”. I think he would be better off rapping in tagalog.
Other tracks have various subject matters like “Iniibig Kita” which is about expression of love, “Valenzuela Love” which is a track about the group representing their hometown and a sex track called “4-in-1. There are also dance/club tracks like “Funky Boogie” which I really don’t find it amuzing. Though the track is average, I liked “Valenzuela Love” especially it’s catchy chorus.
The only serious track besides “Iniibig Kita” is “Dukha” which is about the group’s hopes and dreams of achieving and living the luxurious life.
In all, the finest tracks I found in this album are “Dukha” followed by “Iniibig Kita”, “Tabi-Tabi” and “Laban Sa Lahat”.
Notable Quotes
“Dilaw asul pula, panagisa; Wag kang matataka, kakaiba”
E.H.P – Laban Sa Lahat
“Kahit sabihin pa nila na ako’y isang baduy; Isoli ko ang baby wag na uy”
E.H.P. – Dukha
Summary
The group’s debut album isn’t that bad at all but the quality can still be improved. In all, this album is still worth checking out.
